Shaded non-trafficed flat roof

Hidroizolacija ravne strehe zaščitena s prodcemWhen installing exposed waterproofing layer (above the thermal insulation), we choose an UV-light resistant waterproofing membrane, which needs to be shaded for protection against mechanical damage and ensures the roof a longer life.

Flat non-traffiked roof are usualy covered with gravel, as well as an inverted roof system, where the waterproofing is protected by XPS thermal insulation boards, and it is a long life roof system by itself.

It is possible to use wool thermal insulation on non-trafficked roofs, but the roofs with occasional or long-term foot traffic should be thermally insulated with more load-bearing thermal insulation, such as e.g. FIBRANxps 300-L. As these boards do not yield under load,  additional damaging of non-protected or protected waterproofing membrane is prevented.

Unlike the shaded roof, the INVERTED roof system is, in its essence, a construction with protected waterproofing layer, which ensures durability, and is therefore being used more and more widely.

In order to ensure roof’s longer life, the vertical part of the waterproofing membrane along the wall or attic has to be protected as well.

Note

Bituminous waterproofing layers:

Working with naked flame on polystyrene insulation is not permitted, therefore when using bituminous insulation, self-adhesive waterproofing strips should be used.

PVC waterproofing layers:

The chlorides in PVC membranes have a negative effect on polystyrene boards when in direct contact, therefore an adequate separating layer should be applied between the two.
