Basement floor

There are several reasons why basement floor or ground bearing floor are thermally insulated with XPS insulation:

  • There is much greater possibility for humidification on ground floor (rainwater ingress, flawed waterproofing, flawed water supply…). FIBRANxps floor insulation boards are thermally effective also in damp environment. In case of flooding the space and the floor construction needs to be dried out, but the thermal insulation does not need to be replaced.
  • Basement floor requires a high load thermal insulation, as loads in such spaces are usually higher.

Floor slab

Floor slab is the ground bearing floor, built on oversite concrete between grade beam footings. This is the usual way of constructing, except for a high quality low-energy or passive house, where foundation slab is recommended.

In case of a floor slab, the waterproofing is laid over oversite concrete, and then the rigid thermal insulation, e.g. FIBRANxps boards, is laid over the waterproofing. If the space is heated, the thermal insulation thickness is selected depending on the desired or designed energy class of the building. Before installing the floating screed, the foamed foil FIBRANxpe is applied in order to reduce the impact sound.
